If you’re on the West Side or near WeHo, you should check out this huge gathering of food bloggers for a very good cause. It’s going on RIGHT NOW, but here’s a link if you want more info: http://gastronomyblog.com/index/eat-my-blog/

Seriously, as I’m jumping from simple foodie to the internet foodie/food serving world, I am AMAZED by the sheer numbers AND the community of the food bloggers. WOW. Just click the link above to get the list of all the food bloggers that are participating. Hope I don’t piss them off and they like our food one day. LOL ^_^

And if you’re STILL on the West Side and near Sawtelle tonight, check out this AWESOME “Post-It” art exhibit at Giant Robot 2 (GR2). This looks purdy SWEET! Wish I could make it. Starts at 6.30p tonight with more info here: http://bit.ly/6cgxwO

And last… but certainly not least we (Starry Kitchen) are servin’ it up again today (12-3p). For more info, click this link: http://bit.ly/8fNjD3

(pardon the menu above, my handwriting is the worst… but that’s the food!)

And PLEASE park in our garage (but only in 350 S. Grand garage today). I IMPLORE you to. It’s only $3 for 2 hours. Don’t waste your time with the expensive street parking or another lot. OUR garage is connected to our building. That way when you come, you won’t be pissed at us already and not like our food (because that really hurts… on the inside ^_^).

Btw, we met a couple of people from tumlbAngeles at our Thursday test-run too… which is AWESOME!!! ^_^

Alrighty, gotta jump back in the kitchen and finish prep (yes, I’m literally typing this up in-between making Crispy Kimchi Rice Cakes and Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken for today).

Toodles,

I’m new to this group so here goes a quick one time run-down of us…

(I promise future posts won’t be so verbose ^_^)

While all the taco trucks we’re running around, my wife and I started an “underground covert culinary operation” (aka Starry Kitchen) in our humble apartment kitchen in North Hollywood playing with Pan-Asian comfort food combinations, and we’ve recently been found and shutdown (no joke!)

Now 8-months, 32 dishes (and counting), and 22 5-star Yelp reviews (http://bit.ly/yelpsk) later we’re (thankfully) graduating and ramping up for the launch of a “legit” location, Starry Kitchen DownTown.

DOWNTOWN “TEST-RUN” SERVICE SCHEDULE:

Join us tonight (or one of our other scheduled times below) for one of our “test-runs” while we serve up some fun savory concoctions full of tasty deliciousness and oh so delightful Pan-Asian flavors as we move towards opening the bad boy in the new year!

Thursday, Dec 3rd - Dinner (5.30p - 9p) -> http://bit.ly/7xZSZF

Saturday, Dec 5th - Lunch (12p - 3p) -> http://bit.ly/8fNjD3

Saturday, Dec 12th - Lunch (12p - 3p) -> http://bit.ly/5mNDHo

WHERE IS THIS JIBBA-JABBA YOU SPEAK OF?

It’s in the California Plaza (Water Court) off of Grand Ave. right next to Casa. If you’re driving, WE VALIDATE and it’s $3 for 2 hours in the daytime and 2 hours FREE parking at night. Go here for parking directions: http://bit.ly/5Icgdw

@ 8 Fish Sushi

350 S. Grand Ave (parking structure off of Olive)
Los Angeles, CA 90071

If you take the Metro, you can get off at Pershing Square on the Red Line. Here are walking directions from the station: http://bit.ly/8uGkBF

THE MENU:

Tonight we are serving some of our most popular dishes from our back-patio. ^_^ Just choose the protein (meat or veggie) and choose the way you want it (burrito, Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, or lunch/dinner plate) + a tasty side. Dishes range from $7 - $9.

GIANT ROBOT EXHIBIT in LITTLE TOKYO:

And not to make this post any longer, but if you’re coming downtown, you might as well consider stopping by the JANM (Japanese-American National Museum) for this awesome FREE exhibit from our friends at Giant Robot. It runs until January 24, 2010. Tonight it’s closed for a private event, but if you come Saturday stop by Little Tokyo afterwards to check this out:

Five Secret L.A. Pleasures by...

(via crookedindifference)

Five Secret L.A. Pleasures by Marc Porter Zasada

Every Angeleno keeps a list of secret pleasures, the “locals-only” joys we try not to share with tourists. Since KCRW listeners are like family, I’m offering five of my favorite places to sneak off and relax.

Drinks at the Casa Del Mar
This great 1926 hotel, with its high, wood-paneled lobby and elegant, slightly stuffy bar, overlooks the modern Santa Monica Beach with big picture windows. The whole thing exists in a deep, if expensive L.A. time warp. I order vodka martinis and read Raymond Chandler here.

Picnic at Pirate’s Cove
You drive to Zuma Beach, but you take Westward Beach Road all the way to the iconic rocky bluff at its end. There you park and hike up along the trail. Never forget that this the very spot where Charleton Heston saw the Statue of Liberty, half-buried in the sand at the end of Planet of the Apes in 1968. But keep going till you get to Pirates Cove, a hidden curve of sand beneath high cliffs. Arrive at low tide and tease anemones.

Chess With Old Men in Parks
When I lose perspective on Life, the Universe, and Everything (which happens pretty often), I go sit in Plummer Park along Fountain in West Hollywood and watch the many old Russian men play chess. It changes my whole outlook on the velocity of L.A. and I swear, my soul grows calm. If you prefer old Russian men playing backgammon, try La Cienega Park, at Gregory Way. Will they let you play? Only one way to find out.

Getting Lost in the Camellia Forest
Where can your small children safely get lost in a forest and have, like, Alice-in-Wonderland adventures? The answer is the Camellia forest at Descanso Gardens out in La Cañada. It’s acres of giant flowering bushes and twisty passageways. When my kids were little I’d turn them loose, telling them to “get lost.” They became giddy with joy, but I knew there was actually a fence around the whole property and they could find their way back just by heading downhill.

The Ropes Hike
But what about adults? Where can we have dangerous forest adventures? If you head up Sunset from the beach, turn left on Palisades Drive, left again on Verde De La Montura, park at the dead end, and take the trail to the right, you may, if you get lucky, locate a long, deep, sacred slot canyon of waterfalls and leftover climbing ropes (hint, turn left at the dry creek instead of crossing). A true locals-only playground. Only for the very fit.

Hi Lads and Lovers! Ok, was that cheesy? Sorry I was trying to toss a little alliteration in there for effect. Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA and inconsistent as of late, I’ve been terribly busy…

Anyhoo! Most of you may know or maybe you don’t but LoveBIRDS has a show coming up.. The biggest independent design show on the west coast to be exact! You need to be there. Come and spend the day with us and spread the word to your friends. You will be supporting local design and helping our businesses thrive so all our hard work pays off, so what’s not to love!? Not to mention partial proceeds are going to the local non-profit 826LA which supports students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills.

There will be drinks (you get one FREE), Gift Bags (a secret amazing someone has done the artwork), and we’ve also partnered with the fab crew at the Eco blog Your Daily Thread to bring you cool workshops and surprises throughout the space!

Two more things… Come say hi! Introduce yourself to me… tell me you saw this on Tumblr, and I’ll give you a discount.

Also! I have free wristbands, and I’ve set a couple aside for you all because you’re so wonderful and I appreciate all your love and support. Sooo the first two people that email me, and say something nice will get them. You need to live in LA of course, and come, but that’s it! Can’t wait to see you all there!

GROSS, IT’S BLACK FRIDAY: Instead of getting mauled at The Grove or your city’s equivalent of hell, how about you buy into a raffle for this $100 Apple gift card? 100% of the profit will go to charity. I know you want this. I mean, come on. You’re on tumblr. Doesn’t everyone on tumblr get boners for Mac?

$10 PER RAFFLE TICKET: Donate to orphanages to get added to the raffle.

** Reblog and I’ll give you a kitten. J/K! I won’t do anything for you. But for reals, reblog this for charity. The children! Think of the children! It’s the Holidays! **

Last day to donate is tomorrow! Right now there are only $100 in donations, meaning only 10 entries. GAMBLERS PAY ATTENTION: These are good odds.

slippy:

Big Sur (via Slippy Jenkins)
Want to get away this...

slippy:

Big Sur (via Slippy Jenkins)

Want to get away this weekend and see one of the most beautiful places in California? Well!

I have an extra campsite at the Kirk Creek Campgrounds in Big Sur. A great spot, right on a bluff above the coastline. I booked two spots several months ago, and the other group canceled. So now one of the sites can be yours!

Details - The site is for this weekend. December 4, 5, and 6th. You can come at any time (My group will be in Big Sur Friday morning…we’re leaving Sunday). The site holds up to 8 people. The campground is only a few miles away from Nepenthe and the rest of Big Sur.

So if any of you want this spot, just shoot me an email with any other questions you may have: jim@slippyjenkins.com

It will be a blast, and if you’ve never been to Big Sur, well, this is a pretty great introduction to the place…staying right on the coastline for a few days. And plus, you’ll be with people who know the Big Sur fairly well, so we’ll only do things and see places that are awesome.

Let me know!

Los Angelenos, alas, I cannot go, but you should for four reasons:

Hang out with fun Tumblr folks

DINNER PARTY PROJECT

A few months ago, I left my job at a media company in Venice and started working on freelance projects out of my apartment.

There are great things about working from home, particularly in Los Angeles:

No commute.

The ability to make my own hours.

No co-workers heating up fish in the company microwave.

But some days, especially when I’m in the middle of working on a big project, I can go all day without having an in-the-flesh conversation with another human being. And after a long day of doing that, it’s not much fun sitting down to eat a delicious home-cooked meal by yourself.

That’s why I’ve decided to start what I’m calling the Dinner Party Project.

Here’s the deal: if you live in LA and are willing to come down to Brentwood, I’ll make dinner (see above for a photo of something I cooked) as long as you stay and share it with me. If you’d want to bring a friend along, that’s fine, too. Just let me know in advance and bring a few bucks to cover the cost of the extra food.

I know there are a lot of interesting people on Tumblr, especially out here in Los Angeles. I want to start meeting more of you and reconnecting with those of you I already know in real life.

—

Here are some testimonials from friends I’ve had over for dinner in the past:

Jenn, stylist: “Nathan is a great cook. Every time he’s had me over, he’s been entertaining and made delicious food.”

Mike, actor: “The quality of dish could only be compared to the quality of the conversation. Excellent all around.”

Katherine, painter: “He’s a good host and his place is really cute. The food is definitely going to be good. I’ll eat his food anytime.”

Joanna, writer: “His bungalow is much less rapey than I expected it to be. He taught me everything I know about making huevos rancheros.”

Heather, designer: “Having dinner with Nathan is a delight. The conversation and asparagus were amazing.”

—

If you live in the LA area and want to come over for dinner, send me an email at the.dinner.party.project@gmail.com.

While admitting it’s a “pie in the sky” idea and only in the exploratory phase, City Councilman Paul Koretz is looking into an above-ground personalized rapid transit system for the city. This summer, he formed a small task force to study the system, which is currently being used at Heathrow Airport, and consists of pods traveling on a track. “We’re talking either a track or hanging maglev, essentially units that fit 2-4 people, and you program in your destination,” said Koretz, describing the idea yesterday at a Los Angeles Current Affairs Forum luncheon at the Wilshire Grand. “[The pods] just take you to your destination, and there’s no stopping, except when you arrive at your location.”

Yes, listening to him blew our minds. More.»>

Yes, listening to him speak blew our minds, so this morning we called up Marty Taft, who is heading up the three-person task force (which sounds fairly casual in a nature). “From the valley, along the 405, all the way to the LAX, that would be the first backbone route,” said Taft, a former engineer for Aerojet Electrosystems. “And then there would be loops alongside that would allow people from places like Century City to use it.”

Koretz said that if he could get approvals for a pilot line, he probably seek to make Sherman Oaks to Westwood to Century City the direction of the pilot program. And the councilman seemed prepared to accept that this proposal may never happen. “I am at least studying it,” he said. “Whether it comes to fruition, it’s way too early in the process.”
